Following the depression after World War 1, the US mint only produced just over two million dimes in the two previous years combined (actually none in 1922), 1923 marks a dramatic increase in production. The Philadelphia Mint alone produced over fifty million Mercury dimes. This sudden increase in volume is reflected in the price to buy or sell a 1923 Mercury dime as well. At about $45 for a Philadelphia coin and $400 for a San Francisco coin, an MS-63 dime will only cost you 1/3 of what the previous production demanded.
